FOUNDER, CEO, RACE DIRECTOR
The Irving Marathon was established in 2012 by Lazaro Alvarez and Ronnie Chesko with the vision to give back to the community of Irving/Las Colinas and showcase its beautiful scenic running routes. In 2019, Lazaro Alvarez and Jaclyn Livingston created the Irving Marathon Running Series with the goal of keeping the community engaged throughout the year. The series consists of 8 multi-distance events annually, catering to all fitness levels with race distances ranging from 5k to a full marathon.
At the age of 13, Alvarez moved from El Salvador to Irving where he ran track at Austin Middle School and cross country at Irving High School. He attended Schreiner University where he double-majored in political science and international business. Schreiner did not have a running team. So, he helped start the university's first cross-country team his sophomore year. After college, he moved back to Irving where a running community did not exist. With the help of social media, he started the Irving Running Club, and a few weeks later the Irving Marathon was born. With the community's support, Irving Marathon’s five-year vision is to be a 20,000+ participant running event in DFW and become one of the nation’s preferred running events.
Professionally, Lazaro has excelled in many of his roles including being the top sales person and later top sales manager at AT&T Mobility for multiple years. He was then recruited as an Account Executive for Clear Channel Outdoor, for an advertising sales position in out of home advertising. His last role before leaving the corporate world to dedicate 100% of his attention to the Irving Marathon was a Territory Sales Executive for Western Union.
Lazaro serves as the Past President of the Irving/Las Colinas Rotary Club, Board of Directors for the Baylor Scott & White Irving Foundation, Board of Directors for the Irving Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Ambassador for the Irving/Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce, member of the Entrepreneurs Organization Accelerator Program, and leads projects with the El Salvador Consulate for the Latin American Community.
